Armenian military police and General military investigative department personnel participated in a workshop on effective investigation of torture, other forms of ill-treatment and death cases in the armed forces

On 9-12 June 2022 the Council of Europe under the Project “Human rights and women in the armed forces of Armenia-Phase II’’ (‘the Project’) organised a workshop for Armenian military police and General military investigative department personnel on effective investigation of torture, other forms of ill treatment and death cases in the armed forces.

The workshop was held based on the Sub-Module Effective investigation of torture, other forms of ill treatment and death cases in the armed forces, developed and updated during the first phase of the Project. This is the second series of the event on the topic concerned for the Armenian military police and investigators. The workshop for military police was conducted in cooperation with the Human Rights Integrity Building Centre of the Ministry of Defence and the workshop for military investigators was held in cooperation with the Justice Academy of the Republic of Armenia.

The workshop was delivered by the Council of Europe consultants Mr Sasa Jankovich and Mr Arsen Nikoghosyan. The experts covered international and national legal framework and practice on the effective investigation of cases of torture, other forms of ill treatment and death in the armed forces. The questions related to specifics of examination of cases involving women servicepersons were discussed as well. The participants confirmed that the workshop provided them with the possibility to work jointly on the difficulties encountered in their day-to-day work.

The Project is implemented by the Council of Europe within the framework of the Council of Europe Action Plan for Armenia for 2019-2022. Action Plan level funding is provided by Germany, Ireland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Sweden.
