Global Education Week 2020: It’s time to act together!

Starting today, 16 November, until 22 November, Global Education Week 2020 (GEW2020) will bring positive actions to a wide number of countries across Europe and beyond, reaching as far as Morocco and Mexico.

The GEW is an annual awareness-raising initiative built on experience gained by the North-South Centre of the Council of Europe, the Global Education Network and other partners, to support educators to successfully design, implement and carry out global education initiatives and learning activities.

For one week schools, youth organizations, development organizations, local and national governments, faith-based organizations and other stakeholders come together to raise awareness about the importance of cooperating for protecting our world through: live debates and talks, short-movie festivals, poster competitions, global lectures, workshops, social media campaigns and much more.

This year’s Week acquired a special meaning, as it happens in extraordinary times, where the simple act of coming together and celebrating is challenged by the physical limitations brought to us by the COVID-19 pandemic. For this reason many activities were already designed to be implemented online.

Some highlights:

 On 17 November for example, there will be a joint international webinar, co-organized by GEW’s national coordination in Austria along with other partners, dedicated to the theme of "Global Education and Youth Participation”;

 On 19 November it will be the moment of a new webinar brought to us by the North-South Centre #Solidaction campaign, that will explore the possible paths to guarantee long-lasting changes in the area of international solidarity.

The Global Education Week is boosted by the national coordinators of the North-South Centre Global Education network.

For a more complete overview of all the activities please visit GEW's website or join the GE networkers Facebook page.

All activities are free and open to anyone who wants to join other global citizens in this action week and contribute for a more and sustainable and equitable world.

 It’s our world, let’s take action together!

Global education is education that opens people’s eyes and minds to the realities of the globalised world and awakens them to bring about a world of greater justice, equity and Human Rights for all.

The Maastricht Declaration, 2002.

Global education is a pedagogical approach that fosters multiple perspectives and the deconstruction of stereotypes and builds on a learner centred approach to foster critical awareness of global challenges and engagement for sustainable lifestyles.

Global Education competences build on development education, human rights education, education for sustainability, education for peace and conflict prevention and intercultural education, all being the global dimension of education for citizenship.

The North-South Centre’s work for the development of global education started in 1991 with pioneer regional multistakeholder seminars on the issue. They led to the drafting of the Global Education Charter in 1997, which became its reference background document, later consolidated by the recommendations from European global education multistakeholder congresses and regional seminars, as well as a capacity building scheme for formal and non-formal educators.

Ever since, the North-South Centre has been contributing to global education advocacy and pedagogical support through a number of initiatives, at institutional and education levels.
