A new resolution adopted by the European Parliament on 23 January 2025 “condemns the Russian regime’s systematic falsification and use of distorted historical arguments […] in its attempt to manipulate Russian public opinion into supporting criminal actions such as the illegal war of aggression against neighbouring Ukraine […]”.
This important resolution comes only a few weeks before the third anniversary of the war in Ukraine and marks an important milestone in European Union’s stance on history education and direct consequences of its misuse.
It is worth noting that a motion was advanced by the EPP Group ahead the adoption of the final text of the resolution, that
welcomes the Council of Europe’s Observatory on History Teaching in Europe and encourages it to reflect the need to increase knowledge of Soviet and communist crimes across Europe, in the light of historical disinformation spread by the Russian Federation and its proxies”.
Taking place in the context of manipulation of history by the Russian regime, this initiative followed the objective of “raising awareness of the history of Nazi and communist totalitarian crimes and its systemic integration into school curricula in all EU Member States”.
The final text of the resolution, which calls the Member States to “invest more in education on and research into the common history of Europe and European remembrance”, can be consulted here:
