Teacher’s opinion needed for thematic report on economic crises in history teaching – by 16 June 2024

UPDATE 03/06: the deadline for submission of responses for this survey is extended to 16/06 23:59 CET!

The Observatory conducts thematic studies exploring certain issues related to history education in more depth. The choice of subjects considers the priorities of the Council of Europe, as well as issues which are particularly urgent and pertinent to modern European societies. These thematic reports are drafted by a group of experts, in close co-operation with the Observatory’s Scientific Advisory Council (SAC) and using the methodology crafted and approved by the SAC.

The second OHTE thematic report on economic crises in history teaching aims to examine how economic crises are incorporated in the OHTE member states’ history curricula. The report will cover:

  • the strategies used by teachers to develop students’ understanding of causes and consequences;
  • the links made to political, social, and cultural life;
  • and the use of economic history to teach about societal resilience to national and transnational challenges.

The report will be published by the end of 2024 and will provide information that policymakers and practitioners can use to improve history education.

History teachers from Albania, Andorra, Armenia, Cyprus, France, Georgia, Greece, Ireland, Luxembourg, Malta, North Macedonia, Portugal, Serbia, Slovenia, Spain, Türkiye and Ukraine are invited to respond to a 10-minute questionnaire related to the topic of economic crises in their teaching. This is an opportunity to contribute to a better understanding of teachers’ experiences, challenges and needs with regard to teaching about economic crises within the subject of history.

The survey is available for teachers to complete until 16 June 2024, in the respective languages of the OHTE member states and is accessible via the link below.
