PODCAST: “To create a sustainable participatory culture, you need to start with young people”

Participative democracy is one core element in active democratic processes, which enables citizens to participate in and influence decision-making processes in their communities. We witness an increasing number of participation initiatives and forms of engagement of citizens in political decision-making, especially the deliberative format.

Ms Cornelia Perle from the Division of Elections and Participatory Democracy was invited to speak in “UNDER 30”, a podcast on practical participatory tools, part of the podcast series by the European Union-Council of Europe youth partnership.

Ms Perle presented Council of Europe’s standards and guidelines on civil participation and innovative tools for citizens’ engagement developed by the Council of Europe, such as CivicLab, Uchange and the Civil Participation in decision-making toolkit. She explained what is needed to achieve meaningful participation from her experience.
