Competition on rhetoric skills on human rights in the context of the International Human Rights Day celebration

A competition on rhetoric skills with the topic of “Human Rights” took place in Podgorica on 5 December, attracting participation and support of a large number of university students and professors. The competition was organised for law students enrolled in the legal clinic, as part of a series of activities organised to mark the International Human Rights Day under the auspices of the Legal Clinic. All activities were organised in co-operation of the Council of Europe Programme Office in Podgorica, the European Union Delegation to Montenegro, the Institution of the Protector of Human Rights and Freedoms of Montenegro, civil society organisation Civic Alliance, and the European Law Students Association (ELSA).

Ten best students were selected from all Montenegrin universities to take part in the competition. The contestants competed on various topics including women’s rights, right to life, children’s rights, etc. 

The results of the competition were assessed by three-member jury: Željka Jovović, President of the Basic Court in Podgorica, Nela Savković, professor of rhetoric and Branko Ilić, professor at the Faculty of Arts. The jury evaluated that most contestants were well-prepared both on the topics and contents. The candidates whose presentations were confident and fluent, were rated as the best ones and received the appropriate awards.

The first prize went to Jelena Bulatović, whose presentation was about the “Inheritance rights of women in Montenegro”. The second-ranked Jelena Kavarić had a on the topic of “Freedom of speech”, while third prize went to Bogdan Malavrazić and his speech on the right to life and right to abortion.

The competition was organised within the action "Improved procedural safeguards in judicial proceedings in Montenegro", that is is a part of the Joint European Union/Council of Europe Programme “Horizontal Facility for the Western Balkans and Turkey 2019-2022”.
