Secretary General Marija Pejčinović Burić met the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission, Josep Borrell Fontelles. The meeting, which took place in Brussels on 28 February, focused on the need to ensure accountability for the crimes committed during the Russian aggression against Ukraine and on the protection of human rights in Belarus. The Secretary General highlighted the relevance of the Council of Europe Contact Group with representatives of the Belarusian democratic opposition and civil society.
Marija Pejčinović Burić and Josep Borrell Fontelles reiterated their commitment to reinforce the high-level political dialogue between the Council of Europe and the European Union, working together against all forms of democratic backsliding.
