The Council of Europe and the International Peace Institute (IPI) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to work together on building peace and democracy.
Director General of Democracy Snežana Samardžić-Marković signed on behalf of the Council of Europe at the IPI’s Salzburg Forum “Mapping of the New Geopolitics” (3-5 September 2017), where she took part in the debate and presented the Secretary General’s report on the State of Democracy, Human Rights and the Rule of Law, which this year focuses on Populism – How strong are Europe’s checks and balances?. She also presented key areas of the Organisation’s work.
The Council of Europe and IPI will share knowledge and organise joint events on themes of common interest such as the reinforcement of democracy and democratic governance and the challenge of building a peaceful world.
At the Council of Europe's 2017 World Forum for Democracy, on the theme of populism, IPI President Terje Rød-Larsen is expected to take part in the plenary debate on Multilateral Responses to Populism.
