The Council of Europe is organising a conference in Strasbourg on 21 June to discuss the implications for data protection globally of the recently adopted modernisation of the Convention for the Protection of Individuals with regard to Automatic Processing of Personal Data, known as “Convention 108”.
Held under the theme “Convention 108+, tomorrow's common ground for data protection” following a meeting of the convention's Consultative Committee this week, the conference will bring together data protection experts from 70 countries and international organisations.
Speakers include Christos Giakoumopoulos, Director General of Human Rights and the Rule of Law of the Council of Europe, Alessandra Pierucci, Chair of the Consultative Committee of “Convention 108”, and representatives of data protection commissions from Argentina, Ghana, Mexico, Morocco, New-Zealand and Tunisia.
Deputy Secretary General Gabriella Battaini-Dragoni will speak at the closure.
On 18 May, the Council of Europe's Committee of Ministers adopted an Amending Protocol which updates the convention to tackle the challenges to privacy resulting from the use of new information and communication technologies, strengthen its monitoring mechanism and ensure its compatibility with other data protection legal frameworks, including the EU's.
