Eighty years ago, with the liberation of the concentration camps, the world began to open its eyes to the unspeakable: the planned and organised massacre of millions of people, mainly Jews, in the name of a racist ideology that is the antithesis of the standards we defend today at the Council of Europe.
On this day of commemoration, let us remember the victims of the Holocaust and take this opportunity to better understand the mechanisms that led to this tragedy, and let us fight together against all forms of extremism.
The Council of Europe, founded amidst the ashes of the Second World War, will continue to work to defend the democratic values and human rights that unite us.
