“Giovanni Falcone set a model for international judicial co-operation and law enforcement against organised crime, expanding his investigations beyond the scope of traditional prosecutorial work for a criminal phenomenon that was no longer national.
Falcone applied a determined focus on transnational Mafia activities: seizing financial assets, using specialised investigative techniques and ensuring effective witness protection schemes. His strategic approach remains relevant to solving cross-border crime today”, declared Council of Europe Deputy Secretary General Gabriella Battaini-Dragoni, on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the assassination near Palermo of this visionary Italian judge.
“The Council of Europe has pioneered the establishment of international legal action against criminal networks. Therefore, I would like to highlight the courage and bravery of magistrates like Giovanni Falcone, who has defended our values fighting for justice and for upholding the rule of law”, concluded Gabriella Battaini-Dragoni.
