The European Committee of Social Rights of the Council of Europe and the Inter-American Court of Human Rights are organising a seminar in Madrid on 3 and 4 October to discuss how to protect social rights effectively, at a time when these rights are exposed to growing risks.
Organised in cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Spain and the Diplomatic School of Madrid, the meeting will bring together judges, lawyers, social actors and civil society representatives to discuss best practices to ensure that social rights can be exercised effectively and the specific role of international treaties to protect them.
The conference aims at creating a forum for exchange of case law on social rights between the European Committee of Social Rights and the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, ensuring compliance with international legal instruments promoting and protecting social rights, and guarantying legal follow up by States Parties of the decisions taken by the two bodies. The conference also aims at promoting larger acceptance of international social rights instruments.
In addition, the seminar will examine the current situation of social rights in Spain compared to other countries and the implications of the ratification of the revised European Social Charter, which this country has not yet ratified.
Speakers at the opening include the Minister of Labour, Migration and Social Security of Spain, Magdalena Valerio, the Secretary of State of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Spain, Fernando Martín Valenzuela, the president of the European Committee of Social Rights, Giuseppe Palmisano, and the president of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, Eduardo Ferrer.
