Opre Roma! month celebrating Roma history, language and culture in April

From 1 to 30 April, the Council of Europe is marking Opre Roma! month, dedicated to celebrating the rich contributions of Roma history, language, and culture to Europe’s shared heritage and cultural diversity. The phrase Opre Roma!, meaning “Stand up, Roma!” in English, was a call prominently mentioned during the 1st International Romani Congress in 1971. It continues to inspire unity and resilience within Roma communities today.

Throughout April, more than 30 member states will host national awareness-raising events to highlight Roma history, language, and cultural identity. Many of these events will also focus on promoting and protecting the rights of Roma communities. Among them is the Council of Europe Dialogue Meeting with Roma and Traveller civil society (2–3 April), which will spotlight the crucial role of civil society—especially at a time when many civil society organisations are facing sustainability challenges.

From 5-11 April, the Council of Europe is hosting the 2025 Roma Youth Together seminar, which will gather 35 participants from 21 countries to share experiences and empower Roma youth to act as agents of change and multipliers in their communities.

The highlight of Opre Roma! month will take place on International Roma Day, 8 April, with several key events. In Strasbourg, a flower casting ceremony will honour the identity, resilience, and cultural heritage of Roma people. The ceremony will be held at the Council of Europe and attended by Michael O’Flaherty, Commissioner for Human Rights.
