“I welcome the release of Taner Kiliç, Turkey’s honorary Chair of Amnesty International, who has been detained for over a year. Human rights defenders play a fundamental role in democracy and civil society. They should be free to work without arbitrary interference.
The rights and freedoms guaranteed by the European Convention on Human Rights and the rule of law must be respected in Turkey as in all Council of Europe member states. We will continue our long-standing cooperation with Turkey in this regard.”
