Secretary General highlights Council of Europe role at Ukraine Recovery Conference

“The Council of Europe has stood shoulder-to-shoulder with Ukraine. This includes doing what we can to ensure that when peace comes, it is just and durable. A firm foundation on which the country can rebuild with strong, democratic institutions. A clear European perspective and a positive economic outlook”, highlighted Secretary General Marija Pejčinović Burić at the Ukraine Recovery Conference Plenary in London

Marija Pejčinović Burić emphasised the importance of the Register of Damage (based in The Hague, with a presence in Kyiv), to record and document evidence and claims of damage, loss, or injury resulting from the Russian aggression against Ukraine. “A necessary first step towards any future compensation mechanism that will determine what is owed and should be paid for rebuilding the country”, she added.

The Secretary General underlined the relevance of the Council of Europe Action Plan on Resilience, Recovery and Reconstruction to support Ukraine’s reform efforts in the areas of democracy, human rights, and the rule of law which, in turn, will improve the business climate and create the conditions for sustained economic growth.
