Council of Europe Secretary General Thorbjørn Jagland is attending a major European Summit to promote fair jobs and growth. The Social Summit is taking place on Friday 17 November in Gothenburg, Sweden, and is jointly organised by the European Commission and the Swedish government.
The summit was opened by the Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Löfven and the European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker. Secretary General Jagland took part in a discussion session on access to the labour market. Other sessions focus on fair employment and working conditions, and supporting workers’ transition between jobs.
In his intervention Secretary General Jagland highlighted the positive role of the Organisation's Social Charter. "By making the Social Charter central to the implementation of the European Pillar of Social Rights we can create a virtuous circle of shared and sustainable growth".
