On behalf of the 47-nation Council of Europe, Secretary General Thorbjørn Jagland has made the following statement:
“I condemn in the strongest possible terms the horrific terrorist attack in Christchurch, New Zealand, that has left so many people dead and seriously wounded. Our deepest condolences go to the families of the victims and to the people of New Zealand.
This despicable act is further proof that racism and religious hatred, amplified by hate speech on social media, threaten peace and stability worldwide. There is an urgent need for the international community to work together against this global threat.”
