Council of Europe Secretary General Thorbjørn Jagland met with Czech government officials on Friday 21 April to discuss the upcoming Czech chairmanship of the Council of Europe (from 19 May to 15 November 2017) and the state of democracy, human rights and the rule of law in Europe, as reflected in the Secretary General’s 2017 report issued on 20 April.
The chairmanship will address several key human rights and rule of law issues, such as the rights of persons belonging to vulnerable or disadvantaged groups, gender equality, human rights education and the binding force of judicial decisions.
The Secretary General held meetings with the following officials:
- the Prime Minister, Bohuslav Sobotka
- the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Lubomír Zaorálek
- the Minister of Justice, Robert Pelikán
- the Chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Chamber of the Deputies, Karel Schwarzenberg
