Secretary General Marija Pejčinović Burić has pledged full support to Ukraine during a meeting with Oleksandra Matviichuk from the country’s Centre for Civil Liberties. Ukrainian civil society was key to documenting gross human rights violations and war crimes, and the Council of Europe was stepping up co-operation and support for their efforts, the Secretary General said.
The Council of Europe was working with other international institutions to develop a system of accountability and advising on national investigations, she told Ms Matviichuk. She praised Ukraine’s determination to advance democratic reforms despite unprecedented circumstances and called for top level political backing at the upcoming Council of Europe Summit in Reykjavik.
