Secretary General Marija Pejčinović Burić has met the Lord Chancellor and Secretary of State for Justice of the United Kingdom, Alex Chalk.
The meeting focused on current political and legal issues of relevance to the United Kingdom and the Council of Europe as a whole. Among the subjects discussed were the follow up to the Reykjavik Summit, including the importance of tackling the smuggling of migrants and advancing negotiations concerning the Council of Europe Artificial Intelligence (AI) Convention.
The Secretary General welcomed the United Kingdom’s efforts to tackle violence against women and domestic violence, against the background of its ratification of the Istanbul Convention. The European Union’s accession to the European Convention of Human Rights, the work of the Council of Europe’s European Commission for the Efficiency of Justice (CEPEJ) and GRECO were also raised.
