“The Council of Europe strives to protect and promote human rights of all, including people with disabilities of which there are an estimated 80 million in Europe,” Mr Timo Soini, Chair of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe and Minister for Foreign Affairs of Finland pointed out in a statement today on the International Day of Persons with Disabilities.
The Minister added: “Whilst significant progress has undoubtedly been made by member States across our Continent in this area, work must continue to close the gap that still remains between international standards and practice to improve the equality and inclusion of all persons with disabilities, be they physical, intellectual, psychosocial or sensory disabilities. This requires bringing down barriers for persons with disabilities to allow them independence, freedom of choice, full and effective participation in all areas of life and society.”
The Minister recalled the Council of Europe Disability Strategy (2017-2023), a tool for member States and other stakeholders for the implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and urged member States to continue their efforts for its effective implementation.”
