On 19 December 2024, Sweden officially ratified the Council of Europe's Macolin Convention — the only legally binding international framework dedicated to combating the manipulation of sports competitions. This phenomenon is evolving worldwide, across all sports, alongside the growth of the sports betting market. This ratification strengthens Sweden's ability to fight match-fixing through enhanced international cooperation. The country becomes the 13th to ratify this instrument.
"Match-fixing is a serious and increasing threat in sports and is taking place more and more often across national borders. By acceding to the Macolin Convention, Sweden will have full access to deepened international cooperation and exchange of information. This is a long-awaited and important step to combat match-fixing and strengthen integrity in sports", said the Swedish Minister for Health and Social Affairs, Jakob Forssmed.
“The Swedish gambling market must be in order. Today's decision means that we can continue to push crime away and create security for those who gamble. This is good" said Minister for Financial Markets Niklas Wykman.,
This ratification marks the end of a significant year for the Convention, which celebrated its 10th anniversary. It is the fourth ratification in 2024, following Lithuania, Belgium, and Spain, along with Romania's recent signature. More ratifications are expected to follow in 2025.
