President Guido Raimondi has received the prestigious Treaties of Nijmegen Medal on behalf of the European Court of Human Rights at a ceremony in the Netherlands on Friday 18 November.
The prize is awarded every two years to a key international figure or institution in recognition of their contribution to Europe and its role in the world.
Previous recipients include former European Commission President Jacques Delors and Italian writer and scientist Umberto Eco.
Bert Koenders, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands, was the keynote speaker at this year’s ceremony at the St. Stevenskerk church in Nijmegen.
The Treaties of Nijmegen negotiations took place between 1678 and 1679. The negotiations were one of the first examples of pan-European cooperation, ending a number of wars on the continent.
