The youth event “Confidence in Tomorrow”, to be held at the European Youth Centre in Strasbourg from 14-16 May, will focus on the aspirations and commitments of today’s young Europeans and their role in shaping democracy and human rights. Secretary General Marija Pejčinović Burić and Permanent Representative of Liechtenstein Domenik Wanger will deliver opening speeches at the event, which has been organised as part of the celebrations of the 75th anniversary of the Council of Europe, under Liechtenstein’s Committee of Ministers Presidency.
Other high-level representatives include Michael O’Flaherty, the Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights; María Rodríguez Alcázar, the President of the European Youth Forum; Nina Grmuša, the Chair of the Advisory Council on Youth; and Jorge Orlando Queirós, Chair of the European Steering Committee for Youth.
The programme will feature plenary sessions, working groups on various themes (peace and war, climate crisis and environmental degradation, equality and non-discrimination, social and economic progress, democratic participation, digitalisation and artificial intelligence, access to quality education, young people’s health and mental well-being). Special attention will be paid to the application of the Reykjavík Principles for Democracy.
On 16 May a dialogue between young people and Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Council of Europe states is planned. Subsequently, the key messages of the youth event discussions will be presented by its participants as part of the official programme of the 75th anniversary celebrations at the Strasbourg Opera House on the afternoon of 16 May.
