Gender equality - a world where women and men, girls and boys, have the same chances, the same resources, the same representation, the same rights. How different it would be - economies that prosper with a diverse and skilled pool of talent in their workforce; family tasks fairly shared; better health care, less violence, truly representative democracy.

Yet, there is not one single country in the world that has come anywhere near to that ideal.

In fact, according to the World Economic Forum we need about 100 years to reach political parity and 200 years for economic parity...and that's only if we don't slip back.

That means none of us will see gender equality in our lifetime, and most likely our children won't either. It means we are failing to tap one half of the world‘s talent and potential.

Equal rights, human rights

For us equal rights are human rights. We are determined to lead the change.

We are determined to stop sexism - we‘ve launched the first international legal text against it. We are determined to use all our Conventions and legal texts to further the cause of gender equality. We make sure women are included in everything we do.

Most of all, we are determined to build a safe world for women and girls. We spearheaded international action with our Istanbul Convention - the most far-reaching international treaty to tackle violence against women and domestic violence.

We campaign for women to stay safe online, to have equal access to sport and to live free from harassment. We work for migrant women and for women who have been the victims of trafficking.

Equality is not a women's issue - it's not a luxury or a' first world problem'. It's the very basis of a fair and prosperous future.

 Let's make gender equality reality!
