Back Council of Europe on Copenhagen attacks

The Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, meeting today in Strasbourg, firmly condemned the deadly attacks at the weekend against a cultural centre and a synagogue in Copenhagen.

In a Declaration adopted by the 47 Council of Europe member states, the committee stressed that these attacks, like the Paris shootings in January, were aimed at destroying the values on which European democracies are based, notably freedom of expression.

The Committee of Ministers reiterated its determination to combat such acts of violence and to take action to promote freedom, tolerance, dialogue and respect for others, as well as to fight extremism and radicalisation leading to terrorism.

In a statement on 14 February, the Council of Europe Secretary ‎General Jagland condemned the attacks and said they are “another sign that freedom of expression and our living together are under threat across Europe”.
