As part of his official visit to Greece, Secretary General Thorbjorn Jagland met with Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras. The Secretary General also met the President of Greece, Prokopis Pavlopoulos, the Minister of Justice, Nikos Paraskevopoulos and the the Speaker of the Parliament, Nikos Voutsis. He also met the Alternate Foreign Minister for European Affairs of Greece, Nikos Xydakis and visited the centre for unaccompanied children in Petralona.
Secretary General Jagland is attending a conference in Napflio on migration and refugees: “The Protection of Human Rights of Refugees, Asylum Seekers and Migrants - lessons learned from the recent crisis and perspectives for coordinated action of International Organisations”, organised by the European Centre for Human Rights and Humanitarian Action.
Among the subjects to be discussed in a series of round tables and panels are ways of upholding human rights, including the right to international protection for asylum seekers, refugees and migrants, and the protection of vulnerable groups such as children, victims of human trafficking and LGBT persons. The European Union’s Commissioner for Migration, Home Affairs and Citizenship, Dimitris Avramopolous, is among the conference participants.
