Immigration-related issues in focus of CPT visits

The CPT has continued to be proactively engaged in monitoring immigration-related issues. Notably, two CPT visits in May/June 2024 had an immigration aspect. In Denmark, the CPT conducted a follow-up visit to the Ellebæk Centre for Foreigners, and in Norway, the focus was on the Police Immigration Detention Centre in Trandum. The visit report for Cyprus, published on 17 May, highlighted significant findings on immigration detention, particularly the poor living conditions at the Pournara Registration Centre. Key issues included overcrowding, inadequate facilities, and the treatment of children and vulnerable persons. Additionally, Francesca Gordon and Christian Loda from the CPT Secretariat participated in several key meetings, including an inter-Council of Europe coordination meeting on migration, and contributed to the EU Agency on Fundamental Right’s (FRA’s) draft paper on rights violations at borders. These activities underscore the CPT's ongoing focus and commitment to addressing and improving the treatment and conditions of detention of foreign nationals deprived of their liberty.
