On 4-5 December 2019, in Ankara, Turkey, a round table entitled “Protection of Asylum-Seekers and Refugees under the European Convention on Human Rights” was organised by the Council of Europe and UNHCR in cooperation with the Justice Academy of Turkey. The round table included discussions on a variety of topics, including Council of Europe standards and Member States´ experiences regarding the administrative detention of migrants and alternatives to detention with a special focus on children and families. The agenda also included presentations on the protection against expulsion and refoulement and the right to respect for private and family life under Art. 8 of the Convention on Human Rights, and relevant case-law of the European Court of Human Rights. HELP-courses in the field of migration and asylum were likewise introduced. The audience included judges specialized in migration and asylum cases and other legal professionals.
