Summary of the project: The launch of the “Welcoming through Sport” project in 2015 was one of the answers to the migration of millions of refugees to Western Europe in the last three years. The project is coordinated by the German Olympic Sports Confederation DOSB as a complement to the DOSB federal programme “Integration through Sport”. “Welcoming through Sport” is supported and promoted by DOSB and the Federal Agency for Migration and Refugees. The amount of their support reached 400.000 Euro in 2018. Sports clubs involved in the project contribute to the project by 10%. At federal level 8 federal states sports federations are implementing the project. At the beginning of the project focus was given to low-threshold sports activities for refugees. Now refugees are being involved in all sports clubs activities, including functions at the board level. Sports offered in the framework of “Welcoming through Sport” are designed according to the interests of the target group. Cricket, boxing or aerobics for women are some examples. All experiences made in the framework of “Welcoming through Sport” will be absorbed into DOSB's federal programme “Integration through Sport” and contribute to its development.
