Conclusion of the ACT Project: Two Days Dedicated to Sport Integrity in North America

The ACT Project (Acting Together Against Competition Manipulation) is coming to an end, culminating in a major conference in North America, similar to the other regional conferences held in Rabat (November 2023) and Buenos Aires (April 2024).

The project also facilitated assistance missions in Morocco (May 2023), Iceland (September 2024), and Portugal (October 2024), as well as the Tackling Competition Manipulation in Sport (TCMS) educational programme, organised in collaboration with UEFA. The programme aimed to strengthen intelligence and investigative capabilities, with representatives from 20 countries taking part.

On 2 April, a conference entitled “Safeguarding the Integrity of Sport by Combatting Competition Manipulation and Illegal Betting” took place. Bringing together nearly one hundred participants, the event featured international experts in the fight against the manipulation of sports competitions, representatives of public authorities (police, judges, regulators), integrity officials from various sports organisations (international, continental, and national federations), sports stakeholders, and representatives of legal sports betting operators. The discussions highlighted the threats to the integrity of sport, the tactics used by illegal betting operators to infiltrate North American countries, and the strategies needed to tackle illegal sites and competition manipulation in sport.

The workshop on 3 April focused on “The Essential Role of National and International Cooperation” in this battle. Participants shared their experiences and best practices, also addressing practical issues such as investigative techniques and specific national challenges, particularly in the lead-up to the 2026 World Cup.

Over the course of these two days, it became clear that strengthening cooperation at all levels is crucial to effectively protect sporting integrity on a global scale.
