From 21 to 23 September 2023 the Council of Europe’s Sport Division will be attending a range of conferences and events in Valencia (Spain), organised by the Spanish Presidency of the Council of the European Union in the framework of the European Week of Sport.

The meeting of the Directors-General for Sport will provide an opportunity for the Council of Europe’s work in combating hate speech in sport to showcase the joint EU-CoE project, the impact in Spain through the partnership with the Ministry of Culture and Sport (CSD) and the campaign #SportISRespect.

A conference focusing on “safe environments in sport”, will include the presentation by Irena Guidikova, Head of the Children’s Rights and Sport Values Department, of the EPAS Start to Talk project, which contributes to ensuring that safeguarding mechanisms are in place for children to safely take part in sport in line with the revised European Sports Charter and other Council of Europe safeguarding mechanisms and legislation, including the Lanzarote Convention.

During a side event organised by Sport and Citizenship, in partnership with EU Athletes and Dona I Cinema, Francine Hetherington Raveney, the EPAS Deputy Executive Secretary will moderate a roundtable “The Rubiales case: The start of a new era?” focusing on combating gender-based violence in sport and in particular the joint EU-CoE All In Plus project as well as other relevant work carried out by the Organisation. Speakers include professional athletes, sports commentors, academics and documentary directors who have been involved in raising awareness about gender inequalities in sport and combating gender-based violence.
