The Secretariat of the Council of Europe Convention on the Manipulation of Sports Competitions (CETS No. 215) and the Pompidou Group attended the launch meeting of the Football Player Betting Addiction (FPBA) project.
This project, initiated by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) in partnership with the Greek Federation, aims to study footballers' betting behaviours to prevent addiction risks.
Studies show that gambling problems affect athletes more significantly, particularly professionals, with rates three times higher than the general population. Addicted players are also prime targets for match-fixers, often linked to organised crime.
At this inaugural meeting, organised by FPF's Integrity and Compliance Department, former Greek footballer Ioannis Simosis shared his testimony. His personal experience proved valuable in establishing the project's guidelines.
FPBA marks a significant step in addressing players' betting addiction. Its mission: to protect both athletes and competitions integrity.
Results and concrete action proposals will be presented by the end of the season.
