The President of the Follow-up Committee on the Manipulation of Sports Competitions, Mr George Mavrotas, and the Vice-Chair of the Committee on Safety and Security at Sports Events, Mr Rodrigo Cavaleiro, participated in the 10th Annual Meeting of the Secretary General with the Heads of the Monitoring and Advisory Bodies of the Council of Europe, which took place in Strasbourg on 17 January 2023.
Among the topics discussed were the consequences of the war in Ukraine and of the expulsion of the Russian Federation from the Council of Europe, relations between the Council of Europe and the European Union, and the role of the Council of Europe’s monitoring and advisory bodies in the context of the challenges posed by democratic backsliding.
These discussions built on the findings of the report of the Council of Europe’s High-Level Reflection Group of October 2022, which highlighted the importance of the Organisation’s monitoring work, not only as one of the pillars of its unique dynamic triangle model of standard-setting, monitoring and technical co-operation, but also as a fundamental tool for its future work, in the context of the preparations for the 4th Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Council of Europe, to be held in Reykjavik, Iceland, on 16-17 May 2023.
