The Standing Committee of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe has adopted today a resolution based on a report by Roland Rino Büchel (Switzerland, ALDE), “Time to act: Europe’s political response to fighting the manipulation of sports competitions”. The report underlines the urgency for Council of Europe members states to ratify the Macolin Convention.
The report provides a new and strong political support to the ratification process, especially at the eve of the first meeting of the Follow-up Committee of the Convention on the Manipulation of Sports Competitions (CETS n°215) which will be hold on 24-25 November 2020. Seven States have ratified the Convention since it was agreed nearly six years ago (Greece, Italy, Republic of Moldova, Portugal, Norway, Switzerland, Ukraine), while some 31 other have signed it, indicating their willingness to adopt it in principle. The EU “institutional deadlock” has so far delayed ratification by EU countries.
