Retail shops in Georgia learn about anti-discrimination standards

The Council of Europe is dedicated to supporting the business sector in taking action to address discrimination and promote equality and diversity. The Public Defender’s Office, being the main actor within its mandate to issue recommendations and decisions for the business sector regarding the protection of human rights, is one of the key partners of the CoE.

On 5-6 April 2023 the Council of Europe Office in Georgia together with Public Defender’s Office and Labour Inspection Office supported the Retail Association to conduct the training on the right to equality and prevention of discrimination at the workplace and in services. The representatives of human resources and legal departments of the retail markets, such as Magniti, Smart, Goodwill, Daily, Carrefour, Waymart, Gulf and Agrohub discussed the national and international standards of equality and non-discrimination, reflected on the redress mechanisms recommended by the Public Defender’s Office and the Council of Europe. The Council of Europe together with the Public Defender’s Office conducted the similar trainings for the banking sector and insurance companies.

This activity is implemented in the framework of the Project “Promoting the Effective Protection of Equality and Non-Discrimination in Georgia.” The Project is funded through the Council of Europe Action Plan for Georgia 2020-2023.
