Parent engagement for the success of their children – Project Democracy Starts in Schools

The development of a democratic culture starts from the school. The project “Democracy Starts in Schools” supports the democratic school governance at pilot schools across Georgia in collaboration with school administration, teachers, students and parents.

“We discuss a lot about developing democratic culture competencies in students and student participation in teaching or other processes. What’s most important for using the skills for democratic culture in practice? First and foremost it is important to have respective environment that supports democratic culture, which means acknowledging the students as equal members of school community and involving them in those decisions that affect their academic, personal, or future professional development. In order to develop such democratic environment, one of the key components is parents involvement”, writes Senior Project Officer Tamunia Chincharauli in an article published in the Journal “School Management”.

In the article Tamunia Chincharauli describes how the project supports parent engagement in school processes and what impact parents have on their childrens’ participation in decision making  processes at school. This experience does not stay in the school and supports young people in achieving success throughout their life.

The Project “Democracy Starts in Schools – Engaging School Children in Decision Making Processes in Schools and Communities in Georgia” started in 2022 and is implemented by the Council of Europe in cooperation with the Ministry of Education and Science of Georgia and with the financial support of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC).
