Thirty psychologists from the Georgian penitentiary system improved their knowledge and enhanced skills in the practical use of the “Non-Suicidal Self-Injury (NSSI) Assessment Tool” and the “Adaptation Disorder Assessment Tool” (ADAT), through participating in 2-day training sessions organised by the Council of Europe on 1-2 and 6-7 March 2023.

These tools, developed by recognised psychologists and professional organisations in the respective areas, are used to identify the forms of suicidal or non-suicidal self-injurious behaviour, as well as to identify different levels of distress and plan interventions accordingly.

To evaluate their practical use and applicability within the Georgian prison context, the tools will be piloted in few prisons, before introducing them to the entire penitentiary system. The training also provided insight into preconditions for their utilisation, including identifying the appropriate time and conditions for applying the tools and documenting the results.

This training was conducted under the auspices of the Council of Europe project “Enhancing Healthcare Provision in Georgia’s Penitentiary System”, which is a part of the Council of Europe Action Plan for Georgia 2020-2023.
