European flag marks 65th anniversary

Adopted by the Council of Europe 65 years ago, the flag with 12 yellow stars on a blue background also became the European Union’s emblem in 1985 and it is now one of the most recognisable symbols in Europe. It is synonymous with a shared political project which unites all Europeans, transcending their diversity.

Against the background of a blue sky, the 12 stars form a circle, symbolising union. The number of stars represents a symbol of perfection and completeness and echoes the number of hours in the day, months in the year, signs of the Zodiac, labours of Hercules, etc.

In the Office we are a team of 52 people, working on a variety of cooperation projects that support Georgia in upholding and promoting the Council of Europe standards of democracy, human rights and rule of law.

The Council of Europe is the continent’s leading human rights organisation, with 46 member states, including all 27 EU countries. All our member states are party to the European Convention on Human Rights, which is the cornerstone of human rights protection in Europe.

Georgia became the 41st member state of the Council of Europe in 1999, an historic step best remembered when the Prime Minister at the time, Mr Zurab Zhvania, at the Parliamentary Assembly, declared on behalf of the Georgian people: “I am Georgian and therefore I am European”.
