For the first time, a dictionary to promote inclusive language in addressing disability in Albania is now available, with the support of the European Union and the Council of Europe, in co-operatoion with SeBashku Foundation.
The dictionary provides important guidance on using respectful and empowering terminology when discussing disability. Rather than focusing on a person's abilities or disabilities, the dictionary encourages the use of a positive language, that focuses on the empowerment and dignity of the individual.
This is an invaluable resource not only for human rights professionals but also for journalists, institutional representatives, educators, healthcare providers and the general public who can learn more about inclusive language. This publication serves as a comprehensive guide for anyone wishing to communicate respectfully about disability.
The dictionary is now available online and will be distributed electronically to those at the forefront of fighting discrimination and promoting equality. By providing easy access to this guide, the European Union and the Council of Europe aim to foster a wider cultural shift towards inclusive language, and to support communities in creating an environment of respect and dignity for all individuals.
This dictionary has been developed in the framework of the action on Advancing the protection from discrimination in Albania, part of the joint European Union and the Council of Europe programme Horizontal Facility for the Western Balkans and Türkiye.
