At a time when social challenges demand active and aware citizens, the "Learning from the Past" initiative offers an inspiring educational model for Albanian youth, encouraging learning and reflection on the country's historical past.
Launched within the framework of the Council of Europe project "Strengthening Democratic Citizenship Education in Albania", with financial support from the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency, and in cooperation with the Agency for Information on Former State Security Documents, the initiative aims to build bridges between history and Albania's democratic future.
During March and April, more than 300 students from some 25 schools took part in awareness-raising activities, including documentary screenings, readings of informational materials, visits to the Agency for Information on Former State Security Documents, and discussions with experts to better understand the country's totalitarian past.
These activities aim to strengthen critical thinking and promote democratic values. With the support of their teachers, the students have created a space for dialogue around the concepts of freedom of expression and the right to information, reflecting on the idea that democracy is an achievement that must be preserved and strengthened every day.
