Back Green perspectives on European security

Federation of Young European Greens (FYEG), Cooperation and Development Network Eastern Europe (CDN), Green European Foundation (GEF)

  Aim:

The aim of the study session is to rethink and build a common understanding of European security in the context of new global challenges and through intersectional approaches, guided by the values of democracy, the rule of law, self-determination, human rights, and fundamental freedoms, as well as to create tangible outputs for future initiatives by FYEG and CDN and their respective member organisations.

 Objectives:

  • Fostering intercultural dialogue between youth from different European countries by providing a space to discuss the concept of security intersectionally;
  • Exploring the concept of security as at the intersection of diverse societal factors, and the effects of the interrelationship of security with various societal factors on policy decisions;
  • Deepening the participants' understanding of the current state of affairs of security in Europe, existing approaches to the concept of security and their strengths and weaknesses, and perspectives and lived experiences of those outside their lived contexts;
  • Exploring the role of young people to ensure sustainable and resilient security and peace in European countries, and the tools and solutions at their disposal to do so, such as Human Rights Education and collective action;
  • Through these explorations, working towards concrete outputs that set out common learnings and understandings gained to act as a referential resource for future actions and initiatives of FYEG, CDN, their respective member organisations, and other organisations represented centred on these themes;
  • Motivating participants to push organisations, be it FYEG, CDN, their respective member organisations, or other organisations they are involved in, to consider security issues on their agenda and further develop the topic in their platforms.

  About the organisations

Federation of Young European Greens (FYEG) is the European umbrella organisation for Young Green organisations from all over the continent: from Georgia to Ireland; to Cyprus and Norway. Their 42 member organisations are comprised by various organisations: local ecological groups, student unions, youth wings of Green parties and Green Youth NGOs. They are also an independent, official youth wing of the European Green Party (EGP). The basis of the activities of FYEG is their political work at the European level, which is not limited to lobbying inside the European Parliament. FYEG is also involved in educational projects and in running campaigns together with its member organisations.

Cooperation and Development Network Eastern Europe (CDN) is a capacity-building network of youth organisations committed to the development and implementation of Green ideas in Eastern Europe. CDN gathers 18 member and 6 partner organisations: youth wings of Green parties and NGOs whose work is rooted in Green values. CDN’s political focus is on Eastern Europe, where the organisation works with local partners. CDN also collaborates with organisations and activists from the rest of Europe who want to support a Green Eastern Europe.

The Green European Foundation (GEF) is a European political foundation, part of the Green European family, funded by the European Parliament.
