LIVING COMPASS: training young multipliers for human rights education

European Youth Centre Budapest
23-30 September 2024

LIVING COMPASS – Training Course for Multipliers for Human Rights Education with Young People brings together some 35 human rights educators and activists from around the world to learn collaboratively about, through and for human rights.

Throughout the seminar participants will strengthen understanding of human rights (education) concepts and enhance their ability to apply these concepts in youth-focused settings. Participants will also develop key competences for educators and advocates working in non-formal learning environments and familiarise themselves with Compass – the Manual for Human Rights Education with Young People ensuring their effective use in local contexts. Krista OINONEN, chairperson of the Council of Europe Steering Committee of Human Rights (CDDH) addressed participants and presented key priorities and discussions in the agenda of the CDDH.

Organised as part of the Human Rights Education Youth Programme, the course LIVING COMPASS is based on practicing human rights education as proposed in the manual, and it is also about updating, contextualising, localising human rights education while remaining deeply consistent with the promotion of a culture of universal human rights. It also supports the participants in adapting Compass to their realities, concerns, and aspirations of young people.

LIVING COMPASS began in June through online learning and will be concluded in December. It is organised by the Youth Department of the Council of Europe in co-operation with the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. It aims at supporting the provision and quality of human rights education with young people by developing the competences of multipliers the context of local, national, or international activities and projects and foster the implementation of the Council of Europe Charter on Education for Democratic Citizenship and Human Rights Education and the UN World Programme on Human Rights Education.
