Remembering, resisting and rebuilding: Combating together antigypsyism for inclusive societies

This week the European Youth Centre Strasbourg welcomes a group of 33 young people coming from Youth Express Network (Y-E-N), Youth of European Nationalities (YEN) and ternYpe – International Roma youth network for a 5-day study session “Remembering, resisting and rebuilding: Combating together antigypsyism for inclusive societies”.

The study session aims to empower young Roma and non-Roma participants with knowledge, awareness and motivation to combat antigypsyism, promote inclusivity and take action as active citizens in their communities, with a particular focus on the 80th anniversary of Roma Genocide.

Participants will critically reflect on the concept of “othering” by examining stereotypes, prejudices and biases and understanding their impact on everyday life. In the upcoming days, several Council of Europe policies and standards will be explored, including the CM/Rec(2023)4 on Roma youth participation, and manuals Mirrors and Right to Remember. Participants will become empowered to stand up against antigypsyism and discrimination through human rights education and intercultural learning.

Furthermore, they will have an opportunity to witness a testimony from a Roma Holocaust survivor, Christian PFEIL, and learn about commemoration and remembrance techniques, ultimately creating action plans for local remembrance events.

Read more about the study session on the dedicated page.
