Back The end of democracy? You(th) to the rescue!

International Federation of Liberal Youth ( IFLRY)

 Brief Description:

The “The end of democracy? You(th) to the rescue!” study session engages 40 youth leaders, activists, and change-makers in an intensive training programme that tackles the challenges and opportunities facing democracy today. The program incorporates a mix of lectures, workshops, and interactive discussions that are rooted in a non-formal education methodology, encouraging participants to critically engage with democratic principles and practices.

In a time where the world is grappling with growing political unrest, threats to freedom of speech, and diminishing civic spaces, it is crucial to reinvigorate faith in democratic systems. This study session serves as a catalyst to mobilise youth in protecting, sustaining, and advancing democracy.

 Aim:

The study session aims to examine the impact of civic space cutbacks on democracy and youth, particularly focusing on NGO funding and freedom of speech. It also seeks to evaluate the long-term role of civic spaces in promoting youth participation and social inclusion.

 Objectives:

  • The session tries to identify and mitigate various barriers that impede youth engagement, ranging from formal rules and financial constraints to informational gaps. Another focus is to explore the challenges faced by freedom of assembly in diverse communities. To manage societal tensions and encourage harmony, the session will employ strategies like reducing stereotypes, fostering inclusive policies, facilitating open dialogues, celebrating diversity, and encouraging diverse leadership.
