Slovenian Juvenile Justice Project concludes with training and closing conference presenting key deliverables

On 17-18 October 2023, the European Union – Council of Europe Joint project on “Improving the juvenile justice system and strengthening the education and training of penitentiary staff in Slovenia” held its two final activities: a capacity-building event on European promising practices and a closing conference.

13 professionals working in direct contact with the juvenile justice system were trained on European promising practices. The training contributed to fostering co-operation among these professionals through several exchanges with three Council of Europe experts – a judge from Germany, a prosecutor from the Netherlands and a social worker from Sweden – who delved into the peculiarities of professional practices providing valuable insights for improvement, including on diversion measures and individual assessments.

The closing conference was opened by the Minister of Justice of Slovenia who reaffirmed the commitment to coordinated efforts in the juvenile justice system and announced the next steps that will be taken as a follow-up to this project, including the creation of separate court units to deal with children’s criminal cases. All the project’s final deliverables and the recommendations were presented. Finally, the Roadmap for implementation of such recommendations was formally endorsed by participants and recognised as a vital guiding document for the upcoming reform.
