Alenka Puhar was born into a family of artists. Fostering a similar passion, she pursued an education in English, Comparative Literature, and Psychohistory. Translator turned journalist and publicist, she has made significant contributions to the Slovenian culture and society. Notably, her published work includes analyses of the Slovenian childhood history, biographical literature on forgotten figures, and works addressing socio-political issues. Ms Puhar consolidated her activity in the Slovenian political and civil society sphere by being a member of organisations advocating for the democratisation of society and respect for human rights. 

Her dedication led to her appointment as the Slovenian representative in the European Commission against Racism and Intolerance of the Council of Europe, where she earned recognition for her objectivity and expertise. In 2000, she was elected 1st Vice-Chair of the Commission, underscoring her international standing in the field.

Her tenure in the Commission has been instrumental to solidiying the Commission’s role within the Council of Europe, since the Commission’s inception.Her dedicated work in the Commission provided Slovenia with the opportunity to assert itself in international efforts to prevent and fight against all forms of discrimination.
