Anne Brasseur
Luxembourg

Anne Brasseur was the second woman to hold this position, serving as President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe from 2014 to 2016. During her tenure, she oversaw moves to strengthen co-operation between member States and promote women's rights. When her presidency ended, she became Ambassador of the No Hate Speech Movement.

Born on 19 May 1950, Anne Brasseur is a Luxembourgish politician. Highlights of her domestic political career include her entry into the Chamber of Deputies in 1979 and her appointment as Minister for National Education, Vocational Training and Sport, a role in which served from 1999 to 2004.

A member of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe since 1995, Anne Brasseur served as its President from 2014 to 2016. She was the second woman to hold this position and faced major challenges, not least the migration crisis and ongoing concerns about human rights in Europe.

During her presidency, the Assembly launched discussions and produced resolutions aimed at strengthening co-operation between member States. One notable example was the active promotion of intercultural dialogue to address the challenges of the migration crisis, underlining the importance of a collaborative approach. Her tenure also saw action in support of women's rights. She supported the resolution to combat domestic violence, calling for tangible measures such as prevention and victim protection policies.

After her term of office at the Assembly ended in 2016, Anne Brasseur continued to play an active role in promoting human rights and democracy, notably as Ambassador of the No Hate Speech Movement, a campaign run by the Council of Europe's Youth Department.
