Tonje Meinich has a Master degree in law from the University of Oslo, June 1991. She has experience as a Counsellor for Justice and Home Affairs at the Permanent Mission of Norway to the European Union and she has been a Legal advisor for a rule of law project in Ukraine, at the Embassy of Norway to the Ukraine. 

Council of Europe-related, she was from 1998 to 2001 a member and later chair of the DH-SAC elaborating a recommendation on access to official documents. She was Chair of the 7+7 expert Group and 47+1 negotiating group on EU accession to the European Court of Human Rights, both in 2010-2013 and in the negotiations in 2020-2023. 

From 2020 Tonje Meinich has been a member for the Steering Committee for human rights, and from 2023 she entered the Bureau of the Steering Committee for human rights.
 


The project “75 women in 75 years of Council of Europe history” is organised by the Delegation of the European Union to the Council of Europe with the Council of Europe and the Permanent Representations of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and the United Kingdom.
