Strasbourg, 02/05/2012 – "The idea of media self-regulation translates a desire to see media structures develop a code of ethics which would protect individuals or group interests from unacceptable abuse in the media. Through this, the media demonstrate that state interventions are not necessary".
"Unfortunately, existing systems have not been particularly effective in most European countries. An urgent discussion is now needed on how self-regulation can be improved".
On World Press Freedom Day, 3 May 2012, Commissioner Muižnieks will develop this theme at a conference organised in Brussels by the European Federation of Journalists on the challenge of balancing racial, cultural and religious sensitivity with the right to freedom of expression.
"Freedom of expression and the right to be free from discrimination are not conflicting rights, but are complementary. We should be asking ourselves what we can do to fight discrimination through freedom of expression".
